S.P.C.A.C. (Seriously Pointless Conversations About Culture)

Coming to you from the Midwest USA, we sit around and shoot the bull on whatever nerdy topic we’re into this month. We’ll cover everything from video games, anime, films, and comic books. We hope to bring a little fun into your life, with our antics. Please enjoy.

James and I chat with Asa from Podzilla1985 talk about Nintendo possibly bringing some of our favorite Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games to the switch, the Twitch boycott against hate raids, Sony being weird about updating their games, China's gaming restrictions shut down servers, and Sony is changing up their PS5 hardware, maybe for the worse.

Then we move right along and discuss the highly contentious Pokemon Sword and Shield. We go into whether the game was good enough to be brought onto the Switch, and if it was ready to come start a new generation of Pokemon trainers.

In our season 3 premiere, Sirr from @MyMovieFixPodcast joins James and I as we delve into a discussion about the slightly contested Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain America: Civil War. Who's on the right side of the war, does Iron make any sense in this film, could we write a better ending?

We also talk about some Big GamesCon 2021 announcements, Overwatch's McCree is being renamed, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Trailer Shatters  24-Hour Viewership, a YouTuber Accuses Million-Dollar Retro Game Sales Of Being Scams, and  China Limits Online Videogames to Three Hours a Week for Young People.

Tell us what you think of the items we discussed in this episode? Let us know.

Enjoy this week's episode.

The End of Season 2 and we forgot about it.

James and I roll into this week's roundup discussing several items of news including; Pokémon United is coming to mobile, gaming auction house and the valuation companies are bad, Netflix's Magic the Gathering Series looks lost, Bethesda hires outside talent, and Studio 343 is pushing out an unfinished Halo Infinite.

We then get into the wonderfully delightful indie game Axiom Verge solely created by Thomas Happ. This game is a nostalgia trip out the ying yang, as you travel through a unique take on the Metroid games of old. This game brings much warmth to my heart.

Check it all out in this week's episode.

Do you enjoy looking at the tiny little details and then rubber stamping the form DENIED! when one little thing is out of place? James and I delve into the wonderfully simple, yet ultimately complicated world of bureaucracy, in this week's review of Papers, Please. This game came out of left field, with the simple idea of what if you were a immigration officer in a dystopian country? Seems simple right, you are very wrong. This game starts slow but slowly lets the tension build through each stage until you can feel the anxiety in your bones.  But in a fun way.

We also talk some gaming news, most notably  the upcoming Xbox Game Pass list for this August and then Nintendo going after the little guy, who's just trying to illegally sell their old games.

Check it all out in this week's episode.

James teaches me the intricacies of the human body in this week's episode as we talk about the part humorous,  part educational hit anime Cells at work.  James gives me the run down of what I have to look forward to in my old age as we cover the newest series to bare the name Cells at Work: Code Black, that welcomes us into the body of an older male (fun fact we talk about erections, Yay!)

We also covered the news about the Pathfinder expansion that sets to give us two new classes, exciting.

Along with hearing that we all might soon be able to get a Playstation 5 in the near future, as we talk GPU chip production supply lines.

We hope you all enjoy this week's episode.

Please Enjoy.

James and I change up the show a bit this week. We've added a news segment that is just as disjointed as our conversations. We discuss the video game industry news, the big Blizzard fallout (aka don't touch me there), the new Steam Deck (the Switch killer), Netflix gets into video games, and finally the announcement of Demon Slayer Season 2 coming this year.... Get Hyped!

We eventually make our way into the review of the recently released Super Mario 3d World+ Bowser's Fury.  James and I delve into the strange fascination of Mario in a cat suit; What's the deal with a grown man in a cat suit....

Check out this week's episode on Super Mario 3d World+ Bowser's Fury.

Please Enjoy.

Jackie and I continue our Harry Potter series with the next logical step, the third book in the series; The Prisoner of Azkaban. We discuss the increasing angst levels as the kiddos begin growing up and dealing with the real Wizarding World more and more. How does Harry and the gang improve as characters, did J.K. Rowling make a better choice of giving Harry a new loving family only to later tear them away from him...... I have strong feelings.

Check out this week's episode on Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban.

Please Enjoy.

Vito (Not Your Father's Movies podcast) joins me in this week's episode to reminisce about one of our favorite Batman games, Rocksteady Studios initial foray into the Batman universe, Batman: Arkham Asylum.

In this episode Vito and I discuss the many reasons why this game set the industry standard for open world games and really helped thrust Batman from the big screen onto home consoles everywhere. You'll hear us talk why this isn't necessarily just a Batman game, this is a Batman's Rogues Gallery game that has Batman in it. We go head long into this world that Rocksteady created with fervor and zeal, and hopefully do it a bit of justice critiquing it in the process.

Please enjoy this week's episode.

KnockOut! Cuphead

James and I discuss his slight distaste for the smash hit from Studio MDHR, Cuphead. This fast paced side scrolling shooter has won the love and respect of many who have played it, but it has also earned their ire. This was the game that the Moldenhauer brothers took a chance on and won big, pouring their love and passion into this game that took them around seven years to complete.

Why does James poopoo this game and why does this one give me the dopamine hit that crave so much? Find out this in this week's episode. Please enjoy.

Jackie joins me in reminiscing about one of our favorite franchises ever, the Harry Potter series. In this episode we continue the series by discussing the second book of the series, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. We discuss what made this book such an excellent sequel to the first book, and what made it stand out in the series.  We also talk about what it would be like to have a redneck Salazar Slytherin.....awkward.

Enjoy.

James and I talk about the smash hit from writer Riichiro Inagaki and artist Boichi. If you enjoy anime that starches that itch for being a little bit zany, and a whole lot of fun, we think this might be the anime for you. James and I enjoy ourselves as we talk about what makes this an excellent anime with decent shelf life ahead of itself. We also briefly talk about the Steam Summer Sale.

Please enjoy.

James and I talk about one of his top games of Spring 2021 so far Sakuna of Rice and Ruin. This delightfully fun rice grower simulator mixed with action platforming areas, truly makes for a fun and interesting take on a coming of age story for a Japanese Goddess.

James highly suggests you buy this one, as it is an independent studio two developers that made this one all by themselves.

James and I contemplate how old we've gotten along with mentioning an oldie, but a goodie, Age of Empires 2: Age of Kings.

We discuss how this real time strategy pc game pushed the RTS genre into what it looks like today. It showed us a nice blend of history along with fun RTS multiplayer games. It also allowed James to build a DeathStar in the Galaxy at War rip off of AoE 2.

We hope you enjoy this episode.

Kelly, James, and I talk about the hit anime series, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. We talk about the beginnings and growth of this incredibly heartfelt anime that starts when two brothers, Alphonse and Edward, make a terrible mistake trying to bring their mother back from the dead using alchemy.

This anime sits near the top of our anime lists, as it has brought us much joy and thoughtful evenings as we watched it with friends.  We hope you enjoy this roundtable of discussion as much as we did.

Vito from NYFM joins me again to converse about the wonderful Arkane Studios video game, Dishonored. Dishonored was released in 2012 and is much loved by fans throughout the world. Its blending of action and stealth, meld well with the chaos system that the studio developed for the game.  This is truly Arkane's standout performance, before a somewhat decline in critical success. Even with this Vito and I talk about what has made us come back to this game more than once, on more than one console.

Please join as we talk Dishonored.

We go into the proto Studio Ghilbi film Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, created by the founder of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki. What makes a good Studio Ghibli film? Is it art direction, or maybe a heartfelt story?  Well if that's what makes a good film, Jackie and I agree that this film doesn't have it. Earwig and the Witch is a mess of half hearted movements and small tentative steps from a director trying to exit his father's shadow. Although the movie isn't a complete waste of time to watch, I can say we will not be making this a regular family watch.

Now come and listen as Jackie and I talk about Earwig and the Witch from Studio Ghibli and Gorō Miyazaki.

James and I discuss the South Park game that burst onto the scene with a bang, South Park and the Stick of Truth. This game was the passion project of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, that had some tough beginnings, but able to plant itself firmly as a distinctly South Park game with rpg tropes. Will Princess James betray me and attempt to steal the stick of truth for himself? Check out this week's episode.

This culmination of phase 1 of the MCU was an blockbuster hit that wowed movie goers and comic fans alike.
